ODC Transport in India
What businesses need to know before moving heavy equipment.
ODC stands for Over-Dimensional Cargo — any consignment that exceeds standard road-legal dimensions or weight limits, requiring special permits, route planning, and often police escort before it can move on public roads. Moving a wind turbine blade or a power transformer is fundamentally different from moving a standard container, and businesses new to it are often caught off guard by the lead time involved.
What actually counts as ODC?
There's no single universal threshold — it depends on the state and route — but as a practical guide, cargo exceeding roughly 3.2 meters in width, 4.5 meters in height, or standard axle-weight limits typically requires ODC permits. Transformers, wind turbine components, industrial boilers, and large fabricated vessels almost always qualify.
Why does ODC transport need a route survey?
A route survey checks the physical path — bridge clearances, turning radii at junctions, overhead cables, road surface condition — before a vehicle is booked, not after. Skipping this step is how ODC shipments end up stuck at a bridge that can't take the load, or a junction the trailer physically cannot turn through. For genuinely oversized cargo, the survey is not optional groundwork; it's the difference between a shipment that arrives and one that doesn't.
How far in advance should I book an ODC movement?
Where standard container or full-truck-load freight can often be arranged within days, genuine ODC movements requiring permits, route surveys and escort coordination typically need one to two weeks of lead time — sometimes more, depending on how many states the route crosses, since each state's permit process runs independently.
What equipment does ODC transport actually require?
Depending on the cargo profile, this typically means hydraulic axle trailers, semi-low-bed or low-bed trailers for height-sensitive loads, and in some cases multi-axle configurations to distribute weight within legal limits. The right vehicle is chosen based on the specific dimensions and weight of the consignment — not a one-size-fits-all trailer.
ODC (Over-Dimensional Cargo) transport covers any shipment exceeding standard road dimensions or weight — think transformers, turbine blades, and heavy industrial equipment. It requires permits, a physical route survey, and typically 1-2 weeks of lead time, well beyond what standard freight needs.
